OK, YOU'VE GOT MY ATTENTION!
"TruthQuest History is a deep and rich literature-based history study…but with a difference. You will not learn the story of mankind; you will learn the lovestory of mankind. You will not focus on the rise and fall of human civilizations; you will focus on the arrow-straight line of God's unchanging existence, power, love, truth, and plan for civilization. You will not simply 'meet the culture' or 'get the facts;' you will probe the truths of history so deeply that your students will be equipped to change their world!"

Written in a conversational tone, Author Michelle Miller takes you through a historical journey while keeping her finger on the spiritual pulse of events that will change and shape the future. She uniquely summarizes the spiritual health of these events and narrates them to the reader.
I choose Age of Revolution III: America/Europe, 1865-2000 targeted for grades 5-12 to review with my 3rd, 5th and 8th graders.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that while the time period summaries are geared toward older children, there were reading selection choices listed for younger students as well. The majority of books you should be able to find at your local library.
The modern era is certainly a time of rapid change and gruesome warfare. The author does a great job of taking you through the modern era starting with the Victorian age. You are given an overview of the time period as well as additional literature you can choose to read. Each selection has a suggested grade level and any other pertinent information.
In this particular section, the parent/child can choose from Queen Victoria, Robert Louis Stevenson, Charles Dickinson, Florence Nightingale, Crimean War, Victorian Era, plus much, much more! There's so much to choose from that I guarantee you won't be bored!
Throughout the rest of the guide, you'll explore the Arctic, Impressionists, American Authors, Eric Lidell, The World Wars, Cuba, and The Environmental Movement to name a few.
Toward the end of the guide, there's a mashing of the 1970's through Post Modernism. Rather than looking at individual events, this part of the guide looks at common thinking and spiritual overtone of the time.
We love History. We are accustomed to not limiting ourselves to bland text books - but rather to feast on living books in most every shape, size and color. (Ok, I'm being a bit over-dramatic, but you get my point!).
The best way to study history is as a family with each member being able to enrich their learning with a living book at their level. TruthQuest helps you do just that!
We really enjoyed the narratives throughout the guide that take the student through the time period in an interesting, Christian perspective. Overall the script and accompanying book lists were great! However, we did find the 1970's + section a bit thin.
There are no written exercises apart from the one "Think-Write" chart in which the student fills out during the course of this study. If you are concerned with comprehension, you can always have your child narrate what he/she has read. As for any hands-on activities - you will need to add these yourself.
The only drawback to using a guide of this sort is that you'll need to acquire the extra reading books on your own or through your library. If you are not disciplined enough to do so OR are extra busy, you'll be missing the beauty of using TruthQuest. BUT, if you have never studied history as a family or used living books in that study, I highly recommend trying out TruthQuest History Guides!
