Today, the bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish have asked us to list our ten summer reads.
Ignoring the fact that summer is hopefully over in this part of the world, and that we seem well into the monsoons, I hereby list the ten books that I hope to read in the next three months.
- All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – I recently read The Book Thief and loved it, and based on that I cannot wait to read this book which is also about a small child during World War 2.
- The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – I didn’t love the first book in this series but I was intrigued enough by it to automatically add this sequel to my TBR list the moment I got news of the sequel’s release.
- The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro – Practically everything this author puts out will make it to my TBR list. The only reason I haven’t picked up this book yet is because of the insanely high prices on the hardcovers (and I want only hardcover, Ishiguro is too loved for me to settle for anything less).
- Dangerous Women anthology by George R.R.Martin and co – Now that I am done with the books and the series, I really need something to tide me over until next year when hopefully the next book and the next season of the series is out. Till then, I will settle for the one short story – The Princess and the Queen, that gives us some back story on the Targaryens rule in Westeros.
- Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel – Maybe I will finally get to this Booker winning novel this year? I don’t know, I could say I am waiting for the series to end, but for some reason (even though I really want to read this book), I keep postponing it for something else. Hopefully, I do get to it this year.
- The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee – Another Booker-nominated novel that I’ve wanted to read. I have heard this is superior to The Lowland, which I liked in spite of its flaws, so I cannot wait to read what is supposed to be a better take on the Naxalite movement.
- The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton – I am rounding off the Booker reading trilogy by including this book, which I’ve wanted to read for ages. To be honest, I don’t quite think I can read three Booker chunksters all in a row; I”ll probably just pick one of these in the end.
- The Talented Mr.Ripley by Patricia Highsmith – No
summermonsoon reading list can be complete without some chills and thrills. I’ve wanted to read this classic crime novel (and hopefully the series) ever since I saw and loved the movie. I do so hope I”ll get to it this year. - L.A Confidential by James Ellroy – Another oldie crime novel that’s been on my TBR list ever since I saw the movie. I blame these fantastic movie adaptations for not getting to these books. I worry that I won’t love the books quite as much. Has anyone read these two books? I’d love to know if they are worth my time.
- The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – I am rounding off this top ten list with this. It’s a book that I was quite uninterested in when it first came out, but there have been so many glowing reviews that makes me think I should pick this up sooner rather than later.
