Looking at our history, we can see how barbaric and heartless humans can really be sometimes. Killing thousands of people in a war is nothing compared to the ways some ‘civilized’ people used in torture, especially in the Middle ages. These are only few of those most horrible ways of punishment used throughout history.
The Rack
Used in middle ages to torture prisoners. When placed on the Rack, prisoner’s body was stretched inch by inch, dislocating body parts and most of the time giving them a slow death.
Death by Sawing

Impalement
(Image source link)One of the most horrible ways to die. Victim was forced to sit on a very sharp thick pole as this pole was pushed all the way up to the head from bottom. This torture method was used as examples of war, human sacrifices and also as a way of preventing dead to rise from their grave. Seems like zombies were real after all.
Human Vivisection
(Image source link)Back in the day surgeons were allowed to learn their ways by dissecting hanged corpses. Most of the time those humans were still alive when surgeons cut open the bodies. This was also used it many times throughout history including Second Sino-Japanese War and in Nazi human experiments, according to Wikipedia.
Burning Alive
(Image source link)After branding women as “witches”, they were burned alive after hours of abuse and torture. Thousands of innocent women were killed by this method under false accusations in middle ages. This method was also used in few other ways to punish and as examples.
Death by Boiling
(Image source link)This is also similar to burning alive. It was used in Europe and Asia. Victim was immersed in boiling water, oil, or tar to give them a slow burning death. Sometimes the victim was immersed before boiling the liquid depending on the cruelty of torture.
