Top 5 Things to Learn from Tom & Jerry Show

By Jhilmil D Saha @jhilmildsaha

Hey, you beautifuls, how have you been? I have been inside a cave for a lifetime, and see today, just a glimpse of some sunlight has taken me back to my 1st born child, that is my blog. Going OTT? Don’t worry; even I don’t know what I am saying. And that’s ok. I am what I am. See, I came here to write about Tom & Jerry, and all I am ranting about is me!! What A narcissist!

Now Tom & Jerry, tell me about one single person who doesn’t like this cartoon show. Since, nowadays, kids are too busy watching Shinchen, and I don’t know what shows, I thought of introducing my daughter to Tom & Jerry. Since I have restricted her screen timings, I got her a few comic books of Tom & Jerry. And believe me; it worked like magic. Firstly she has reduced her screen time by herself, and secondly, she smiles quite often, nowadays probably reminiscing the funny excerpts from the cartoon. She also wrote a poem about a mouse. I will share that someday. Sometimes she reads the comics loudly to me, and sometimes I do that for her. While revisiting these cartoons, I found out you can actually learn so many things from the mischiefs and mess-ups of these 2 funny cat-and-mouse chases. Here I have listed 5 such scenarios that we often find in Tom & Jerry and what we can learn from those:

Top 5 Things to Learn from Tom & Jerry Show

1.       1. Restrict emotions: Remember a very common scene where Tom gets confused between the Angel & the Devil sides of himself in a momentary situation where he has to take a decision, like if to eat Jerry or leave him (given they are born enemies). Don’t we come across such situations in our daily lives? On one side, there is the temptation of eating the unhealthy burger that your Devil side tells you to do, and on the other side, there is this Angel side that says no so that you do not fall sick. Here he restricts his emotion of anger, hatred, and grudge and listening to his Angel side spares him.Well, he might have missed a tasty meal, but he gets back loyalty and trust from Jerry. And, well, trust is the most expensive thing in the world. Isn’t it?

2.       2. Guard your thoughts: Tom is head over heels for a pretty lady cat. He can do anything and can go to any height to get her attention. She is neutral and does not show her real feeling or real interest, but only accepts the adorable gifts he gets her to woo her, and sometimes agrees to spend time with him in return. Then sometimes, she demands more gifts which becomes more and more difficult for Tom, and at a point, it becomes absolutely absurd, and he ends up inviting unnecessary trouble in his life. Well, don’t we do this so often in our lives too? We try to please people, try to get their attention, do all sorts of nonsense things, be the butt of jokes and get into a complete mess at the end, only to know the people whom we were doing these things for don’t even care about our presence in their lives. They are just taking advantage of our vulnerability and juicing out our energy for their gratification. It’s not their fault; it’s the fault of our thoughts, as we hope someday they will reciprocate our feelings. But we should understand that this is what we think. It is not the reality. See people the way they are showing themselves to you. If we fail to do that, we just let ourselves be used.

3.       3. Take responsibility: Tom’s master has asked him to keep the house clean and mess-free. Everything is going fine, but just the sight of Jerry makes him chase him to the point where the entire house turns to Hell. When the master returns, he finds everything in pieces; Tom smoothly points to Jerry about the mess. But in reality, Jerry was just there doing his business, and Tom poked him and chased him throughout the house. We do it too in our lives, unnecessarily make enemies, pick up fights, and waste our energy at the wrong places for petty reasons. What do we get in return? Only grief, trauma, emotional breakdown and all sorts of unpleasant things one can think of.

4.       4. You can still live with people whose ideas are different: No matter what they do to each other, how many fights and chases they go through, they stick to each other, never leaving. In our lives, too we encounter such situations in our personal and professional lives where we do not share our ideologies with anyone else. It does not mean that you cannot live with them or they are bad, or even they hate you.

5.       5. Let go: You remember one episode where a cute chicken thinks of Jerry as his caregiver, and Jerry instantly starts feeling the connection and starts going to any length to protect the little chick. However, when the chick finds her real mother and siblings, he instantly leaves, and Jerry lets him go with a heavy heart. We come across such people in our lives, too, whom we feel an instant connection to, and we feel like keeping them with us for the rest of our lives. But that’s not the right thing to do. We should let them go the way they want to without holding them back. It’s ok if they are not going to be there with you forever; their memories will always be.
