Top 5 book types for young toddlers

There are books out there for a variety of age group, but when I went out to look for books that were specific to this age group, the options were limited and narrow. At this age, she is 18 months, reading with her is like letting her destroy the pages. But, reading to her, by each day is becoming easier. This list of top 5 book types for young toddlers will help to narrow down the choices.

When I was pregnancy with my daughter, I had decided then on that I would encourage my child to read voraciously. Though smartphones play an important part in her life as of now, I want her to occasionally glance and better still open a couple of pages too.

So, to start off, I have 5 varieties of books that I feel these young toddlers really enjoy. How did I figure that out? It was a simple exercise of taking her to the nearby book store. She was interested in particular books that fall into these categories.

Here are the categories from which you should select books for young toddlers:

Picture books with less sentences

Yes, we want a well-read child at the end of the day, but reserve it till they learn to read. For now, big pictures and colorful sceneries is what attracts them. Make sure you read the sentences on the pages and also point out animals, birds, or other items seen on the page.

Touch and feel books

Even I love touching them so what else to expect from a toddler? These are excellent to develop their understanding of different textures and thus opposites too.

Hard board books

These books are firm to hold for those little fingers. See what happens is if you buy flimsy books with thing pages, the only fun they will have is ripping those pages off. So, invest in hard board books that are difficult to bend or rip apart.

Bed time story books with music

Music is something that my daughter loves no matter what type it is. So, when you are creating a bedtime routine, invest in a book that has soothing sound so she loves listening to it and your voice.

Books that promote physical activities

Find books that have action words like jump, shout, throw your hands, and so on. Repetitive actions and words will help them learn while having fun.

When you read to children this young, don’t forget that their attention span is less than 15 minutes. So, when I read to my daughter I make sure that I split the reading time in short spans of 5-7 mins maximum. She has her favorites too that she asks us to read.

Reading is fun and encourages children to imagine. Imagination is what leads to innovation. We all know the benefits of reading and these kind of books will help create a foundation for a future avid reader.

Which are the books you have invested in?
