Prison, A place for the confinement and punishment of persons convicted of crimes, especially felonies.A jail is used to temporarily detain those who are suspected or convicted of a crime. It is used for the short-term, usually to hold those awaiting trial or to hold those convicted of low-level offenses that have sentences of one year or less. A prison is a facility that holds convicts who have committed crimes the legal system deems especially serious for more long-term sentences.The most notable difference between jails and prisons is that prison inmates have been tried and convicted of crimes, while those in jail may be awaiting trial, where they may yet be found innocent. A prison is under the jurisdiction of either federal or state governments, while a jail holds people accused under federal, state, county, and/or city laws. A jail holds inmates from two days up to one year.
La Sabaneta Prison, Venezuela.
Venezuelan prisons are notorious for their brutality and poor living conditions. Disease outbreaks are a frequent occurrence due to overcrowding and poor hygiene, and many prisoners fall victim to the corruption of the system.There are roughly 25,000 prisoners in Venezuela, but the facilities are designed to hold 15,000.This means like prisons such as Sabaneta are severely over-crowded, and the perfect breeding ground for diseases such as cholera, which once wiped out around 700 prisoners at Sabaneta prison. In Sabaneta specifically, there are roughly 3,700 inmates housed in a facility designed for no more than 700.It is considered to be the most brutal prison in South Africa. Basic tool of torture of this prison is ignorance of the prisoners, no medical aid is provided, and dearth of food is always there. Insanity is so prevalent here that once cholera wiped out 700 inmates. In 1994, 100 inmates were massacred here. Violence is another act prevalent here. Inmates are said to use any object near them as the weapon to attack each other. Competition for survival is found to occur over here. Meager availability of basic amenities of life lead to this competition.

Gitarama is the second-largest city in Rwanda, behind Kigali, the capital. Gitarama is the capital and largest metropolitan area in the district of Muhanga. Due to its geographical location, the city serves as the gateway to the west and south of the country. During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Gitarama was the seat of the provisional government. The city has many amenities, including the ones listed below.Tool of torture used by this prison is insufficient place to the prisoners. Basically designed place for 400 inmates is being filled in with 6000 prisoners. Human feces is said to fill the occupied area which cause gangrene to prisoners resulting into their death. Food is also provided in so much scarce that prisoners have been reported to eat each other's flesh out of desperation and stress. Most of the prisoners held here have committed genocide related crime.
Diyarbakir Prison, Turkey.
Diyarbakır Prison is a prison located in Diyarbakır, southeastern Turkey. It was built in 1980 as an E-type prison by the Ministry of Justice. This prison is said to perform maximum violations of Human Rights per prisoner. Besides, physical, mental torture and sexual abuse of the prisoners the most dreading fact about this prison is that even children are also incarcerated for life without pity. This fact really makes this prison stand out of the list.After the military coup of September 1980, the generals abolished parliament, suspended the constitution and banned all political parties and unions. More than 30,000 people were jailed within the first four months after the coup, leading to prisons such as Diyarbakır becoming severely overcrowded. Diyarbakır became notorious for the cruelty inflicted upon the inmates and dire living conditions. The period dating between 1981 - 1984 is known as the "period of barbarity" and refers to the systematic torture administered which cost multiple prisoners their lives.
Tadmor Military Prison, Syria.
Tadmor Prison is situated in the deserts of eastern Syria, roughly 200 kilometres north-east of Damascus. The facility was initially built by the French Mandate forces after World War One to be used as military barracks, but when it was handed over to the Syrian Government, it quickly became known as Tadmor Prison. Executions are said to be done on a massive scale. One instance of the massive execution is done in June 1980, when President Hafez Al-Assad ordered the killing of all the prisoners as retaliation for the attempted assassination on his life by the Muslim brotherhood. The massacre programme lasted for 2 weeks which resulted in the death of around 800- 2400 inmates.

Carandiru Prison, Brazil.
Carandiru Penitentiary was a prison located in São Paulo, Brazil. The prison was designed and built by Samuel das Neves in 1920, when it was considered a model-prison to meet the new demands of the 1890 criminal code.It is famous for its tragedy of 1992, which is known as Carandiru massacre. In this mass execution of the inmates was done by the guards. Drauzio Varella, a voluntary physician, in his book "Carandiru Station" mentioned his own experience and the dreadful condition over there. It has recorded 1300 deaths in its 46 years of history.
