... And if not there's always Wednesday!
Yes, some people consider a winning season breaking the streak but the streak officially ends with a .500 season and that can come tonight when Gerrit Cole takes the mound for the Pirates.
Can you believe it? Its taken a long time for this moment to come and we are all about to witness the positive side of history after be stuck in the unfortunate mess of **** poor management and decision making history for 20 straight years.
The Pirates are finally going to become official winners.
The fans deserve it, the city deserve it, this group of players and coaches deserve it and Pirates management and ownership deserve it. Since Im already considered a shill for the Pirates Front Office none of these comments should surprise anyone.
5 seasons ago.. Nearly 6, the Pirates organization went through some major changes. It all got kickstarted in 2007 when Bob Nutting took over as Majority Owner, however, Kevin McClatchy remained for a few more months making the bulk of the decisions, continuing to run the franchise into the ground as he had since 1996. Matt Mortis came and so did Danny Moskos. Bob Nutting spent that season visiting different team owners, Presidents, GM's.. Learning how Baseball worked. Learning and finding out what the Pirates have done wrong for so many years. It's no surprise that it didn't take long for the biggest problem - Kevin McClatchy to "step down" and GM Dave Littlefield was canned. The look for new Management was on its way.
When Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington were brought in, they inherited an organization that would've had Condemned notices stuck to its front door of it were house. It was in terrible shape thanks to years of Kevin McClatchy's mismanagement. The Pirates big trade pieces came during a big buyers market with little demand for a Left Fielder with crummy range, and a Right Fielder who had been an injury liability his entire career. The fire-sale was on, but so was the plan to rebuild this organization.
Some people feel that the rebuild could've happened sooner and that might have been true but this Management team learned from the mistakes of the others and weren't about to make big mistakes in order to rush things. The decisions were conservative and safe while they allowed the Drafts to to be their focus. While they allowed the Minor League system to be their focus. They waited for sensible trades and Free Agent acquisitions. Not all were good, but none of them hurt the team or hurt the budget. Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington did what the others failed to do by eliminating the terrible decisions and not rushing impatiently to appease the fan base and local media.
6 seasons later and the Pirates are not only seeing their 3rd straight season of more wins and improvement, but they're about to break the largest streak in all of Pro Sports with a legit shot at the Playoffs! From condemnation to Pennant races! They don't get the credit at all, but without a salary cap and the luck of lottery balls handing them world class elite talent, this Management team might be the best of all the 3 sports teams in Pittsburgh. What they inherited, what they've built, the sport and crummy economic system MLB has installed, they certainly have had the toughest Management Jobs in Pittsburgh sports.
Tonight is huge! This isn't just about breaking the streak, this is also about facing adversity in a pressure situation. This is what the playoffs are. The Pirates have a chance to win a big game for the organization and against a good Pitcher. These are situations where a hungry team comes out on top. The Pirates couldn't have asked for a better situation to prepare themselves for the September Pennant Race! Pressure situations like this are a gift and for a kid like Gerrit Cole, it will show the Pirates what he's made of for this Pennant Race!!
Let's Go Bucs! Let's End this streak tonight and get into the Playoffs! Me and Steelreign have some Playoff baseball we want to attend in PNC Park!
