untitled by NYC musician Toby Goodshank is a bona fide cult classic. To celebrate its tenth anniversary the album now gets an overlong reissue. Goodshank covers a lot of ground, from garage rock to rap to anti-folk.
Foregoing song titles - the tracks are numbered - Goodshank eagetry borrows from and deconstructs classics from America's cornucopia of left-field music legacy. Track 5, for instance, sounds a lot like The Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane. the gnarly and gritty sound of Sonic Youth. some Hüsker Dü, Big Star, the list goes on and on.
Some of Goodshank's lyrics surely will infuriate PMRC should he ever make it big, but his stature as an essential underground artist is all that matters in the long run.
untitled is re-released on yellow vinyl via Tiny Room Records (Netherlands) and Lousy Moon Records (Germany).
