To save money this summer I moved to Saint-Denis, an ethnic working-class neighborhood at the edge of Paris. I feel like I moved to North Africa. I share the flat with one other American girl, a French girl, a Tunisian girl and a crazy cat. The streets are very lively, especially on market days, but I’m definitely aware of the fact that I’m a racial minority here. It’s sort of a surreal experience, and I’d like to write more about it when I have more time.

To give you an idea: I can see both the Basilique de Saint-Denis (a beautiful Gothic cathedral where most of France’s kings from the 10th to 18th centuries are buried) and a KFC from my window.

More pictures forthcoming.
