I don't even know where to begin writing this post. I've thought about it, started it, erased it, and tried again. I can't even fathom what the families, victims, and community of the Sandy Hook shooting are going through right now, and nothing I've experienced in a lifetime seems appropriate to compare it to.
I can't imagine being one of those parents. Going to pick up my son from school and being told the news that he didn't make it. A small, innocent child. A life that has yet to live to his or her full potential, or really at all.
Most of us have no connection whatsoever to those children or families that have lost loved ones, but we all feel as though we've lost something this week. We may have lost hope in our country, we may have lost the feeling of safety and comfort in a elementary school, or anywhere we go for that matter. We feel for those that are mourning the loss of their family members, and we feel for a community that is beginning a long mourning process.
Amongst all of the facebook and twitter comments about gun control, crazy people, and severe sadness, I found the most inspiring comment I had seen all day.
"The best way to heal your heart, is to share kindness. If your heart is sad re: the news from CT, then do something kind."
How simple and true is this?
It completely touched me and I felt that I needed to share it with all of you.
We cannot change the events that happened in that quaint little town last week. We may never know the real reason behind such a horrible tragedy. But we can change how we treat each other, ourselves, and those in our community.
Yesterday, after I had been chasing Bubba around for hours, changed an unspeakable amount of dirty diapers and my patience wearing thin, I reminded myself how lucky I am to be able to hold him right now. Some parents will never have that chance again and we all need to be considered SO lucky for that reason, among others.
The only thing I can think to do now is work on the person I am, and strive to be kind to those around me. A small act of kindness goes along way. My heart is breaking for the families of these poor children, and I want to help in anyway I can. If anyone knows of an organization reaching out to assist them, please let me know.
Rest in peace little angels. Rest in peace heros; teachers and other faculty who sacrificed your lives to save your students.
My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all of those in the community. May God Bless you and heal your aching hearts.
