‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Fame Bernard Hill Dies At 79

British actor Bernard Hill died at the age of 79 on Sunday. Scottish actress Barbara Dickson, who once co-starred with him for a role, shared the news of his demise on social media platform X.

British actor Bernard Hill, famous for his roles in the 1997 movie Titanic and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, passed away at 79. Hill had a magnificent career not only in films but also in television and theater.

His death was announced by Scottish singer and actress Barbara Dickson on X. She tweeted,

It’s with great sadness that I note the death of Bernard Hill. We worked together in John Paul George Ringo and Bert, Willy Russell marvelous show 1974-1975. A really marvelous actor. It was a privilege to have crossed paths with him. RIP Benny x#bernardhill pic.twitter.com/UPVDCo3ut8

Bernard Hill was born on December 17, 1944, in Blackley, Manchester, England. The actor received acclaim for playing Yosser Hughes in the British TV drama series ‘Boys from the Blackstuff.’

The British Academy Television Award-winning drama was the first step in Bernard Hill’s much-appreciated career. Nonetheless, the credit for his worldwide recognition goes to two of his hit roles.

He played Captain Edward Smith, the British sea captain and naval officer of RMS Titanic, in 1997’s Titanic. James Cameron’s directorial film highlighted the impeccable acting skills of Bernard Hill. Through his role, Hill highlighted the integrity and decency of the captain who died in the tragic incident. 

Likewise, he also received praise for his acting skills in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He played the role of Theoden, King of Rohan, who is manipulated into becoming a fearless idol. 

Furthermore, Bernard Hill played crucial roles in many blockbusters and award-winning films. His notable credits include Gandhi, Shirley Valentine, The Scorpion King, The Boys from County Clare, Gothika, Wimbledon, The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, Joy Division, Save Angel Hope, Exodus, Valkyrie, Interlude City, and Second Chance.

Due to his dedication to his profession, netizens also mourned the loss of the legendary actor.
