Getting a even natural looking tan can do wonders for your swimwear confidence
Unless you’ve been blessed with clear, alabaster skin, 9 times out of 10 you look better with a tan. While there will always be a debate on how healthy tanning really is, it’s hard to deny the positive beauty effects that come along with having one: legs look leaner and more toned, and you can wear less makeup because skin looks radiant (which is always a plus in the heat). If you like the look of a tan but have a hard time achieving one, no worries: gone are the days where you have to slather on baby oil and burn by the pool all day (which isn’t safe nor sexy). In addition to getting a tan the old-fashioned way, there are so many easy alternatives to try for that warm, healthy glow:
Tanning Oils with high SPF are a great way to get the bronze skin you want quickly, while still protecting you from the sun.
Natural Tan (Tanning Oils and Creams)
Sitting by the pool in your swimsuit is probably one of the best ways to get the tan that you want. And you can do it without totally getting burned to a crisp. First, make sure you exfoliate to remove any dead skin cells before you head out so that your tan won’t be blotchy. If you’re planning to splash around in the water, apply a water-resistant sunscreen instead of a sunblock (sunscreen allows skin to tan lightly without completely blocking out the sun). If you’re only lounging, a tanning oil or cream with a high SPF is perfect to use.
Limit your tanning time to an hour, and change positions after 30 minutes so that it will be even. Try not to be out during peak sun hours (10am-3pm) to avoid sunburn or heat sickness. Repeat this process for 2-3 day to build a good base tan, and keep skin hydrated with aloe or coconut based moisturizers. After you build your base tan, you will only need to sit out on in the sun every few days or so to maintain it.

How do fake tans work?
Fake tans work by using chemicals like DHA or Carotenoids (yes from the same root as carrot) being absorbed into the top layers of your skin called the Epidermis. These are not actually dyes but in fact chemicals that interact with the dead cells in your skin to give you more tan looking skin. You can learn more about these fake tanners on Wikipedia.
Spray Tan
Many like to get a spray tan early in the season so that they don’t look pasty once they peel off all of their layers. A spray tan can be done at a salon (Mystic Tan is really popular) or with an at-home kit. Be sure to exfoliate thoroughly to remove dead skin cells and moisturize to prevent dry spots before applying. Spray tans have gotten much better as their popularity has increased. As long as you don’t overdo it you won’t end up with that orange oompa loompa look.

Self-tanning gels, mousses, and towelettes allow you to build your base glow in the comfort of your home.

Quality bronzers like this are a great way to get that summer glow without having to stay out all day in the hot sun
Similar to a spray-tan, self-tanning gels, mousses, and towelettes allow you to build your base in the comfort of your home. Their tanning effects are gradual, so you have more control with this technique over spraying. Start with a light application and build as needed to avoid turning orange or streaking. Prior exfoliation and moisturizing is key as well.

Liquid Body Bronzer
If you haven’t had time to work on your tan but are planning to show a little more skin such as in a cute bikini, liquid bronzers are a quick fix without commitment. After showering and 30 minutes before getting dressed, apply bronzer where needed. You’ll have a pretty glow all night, and the bronzer washes off easily with soap and water.

(just be sure to wear an SPF of at least 30 when you’re outdoors to protect yourself from UVA Rays)
Whichever way you choose to achieve your healthy glow, be smart about it and start light!
