Tips for winter gardening

While winters may be the best time to garden here are a few tips that you need to keep in mind to take care of your plants.

However, if you stay in a place that experiences extreme temperature, then you would have to take some extra care for your plants.

Plants naturally have the ability to sense the changes in the atmosphere, and they thus adjust to these changes well.

In the warm weather they would automatically flower but in the cold temperature would slow down their growth and make them dormant.

You may want to send plants online to your near or dear ones, but before that, you need to know how to take care of the plants in winter.

Protect your plants

The plants usually survive the harsh winter months easily, but some may not have the strength and may wither and die.

A hard freeze could cause the buds to get damaged. This is something that may not be prominent but may show when the bud flowers where you would be able to see the brown spots on them.

At times it is also possible that the bud could freeze entirely and then drop off all by itself. Avoid yourself from this pain of seeing your plants die off.

Here are safe tips that can help your plants to grow and survive in the winter months.

Cover the plants

If your plants have an open bud or flower, then you should cover it with a frost cover or a sheet.

Make sure that you do not use plastic to cover the plants because that could heat up the plant.

You may also choose to cut off the buds before the winter and before it freezes.

The plants could be brought indoors before the winters and kept at home in the warmth.

Here is what you should do with your plants in the winter months.

  •    Continue to plant till the ground is soft and can be dug a hole into
  •    Adding mulch to the plant helps to keep the temperature of the root stable
  •    Adding compost to the plant supplies the plant with the organic matter and nutrients
  •    Watering the plant can help it to survive the cool breeze. It is best to hydrate the entire plant including is roots and its shoots
  •    Bring in the houseplant and spray it with the chemicals that are safe for people as well as for the plant. Make sure to position the plant in such a way that it gets direct sunlight and light for at least five hours.

What you should not do

The winter is the time when the plants will go dormant and rest. So avoid fertilizing them at this time. This will only interfere with their sleep and will also kill any new growth that could be tender at this stage.

You may even want to skip the regular cycle of watering at times when the ground is not frozen.

Just understand your plant and its warmth and that should be enough to protect it during the chilled winter months and see it bloom as soon as the winter subsides.
