Tips for Addressing Your Envelopes
We are firmly inside of "invitation season". Its time to book your calligrapher if you haven't already done it. You need to stuff, stamp, seal and head to the Post Office in order to get your beautiful invitations into your waiting guests hands.
Its a great time of anticipation and excitement, but its also time to get organized!
Miscellaneous Tips:
  • Try not to address your envelopes at the very bottom. The bottom (5/8") is reserved for bar codes, etc. This is something you need to think about if your mail will be automated.
  • Provide 10% overs on your envelopes. Human error is real. Unless you are having your envelopes digitally printed, don't skip this step.
  • Spell out everything... Your calligrapher SHOULD go ahead and spell out any abbreviations that you've indicated, but you will help them out (and protect the overs you've provided) by having them already done the way they will be written.
  • Allow extra time for delivery. Non-standard addressing CAN slow down automated or manual mail sorting... Its just something to think about. Particularly with ornate scripts.
  • Return addresses are a MUST. Think about the integrity of your list. You want to know if your invite did not arrive safely.
  • Seal those envelopes completely. Use a sealer or a small sponge and water. V-Shaped flaps are particularly tough to get closed with no breaches. Make sure all of the gummed matter gets wet and you apply pressure evenly to get it closed correctly.
  • You can protect your envelopes from some automation and unnecessary markings by having them hand canceled...

These are just a few tips to get you started!
Take care til' next time... --ct
