Thumb Print Spider Halloween Cookies

By Tejal Hewitt @Tejal_x

I decided to make some fun Halloween cookies using spiders.

Using an american based thumb print style cookie recipe, watching an episode of Barefoot Contessa slightly inspired me to try these little cookies.

To make the spider element, you could probably use small milk buttons instead of chocolate balls.

Now I know they look at little crab like, but I was struggling to put some eye balls onto the white sugar balls as my edible black pen had become dry!

I did mention on my Halloween Cup cake post, but My kids are off to a Halloween camp and what better for them to take then some home-made thumb print spider cookies!

Now am I a Halloween person?! Well I’ve often asked myself this. As I hate fancy dress or costumes, and the thought of trick or treating does not appeal! Feels like you are begging for sweets – but on the other hand the kids love it! Here in the UK it’s slowly getting bigger, and more people are involved.

The secret is that if someone has a Halloween item in a window then go knock for trick or treat – otherwise don’t bother. On that same note, I think 8pm should be the last call also, and if you don’t wear a costume then don’t expect any treats!

Ingredients:
100g margarine
75g Light brown sugar
1/2 Tsp Vanilla
1 Egg
225g Plain Flour
1/4 Tsp Salt
Chocolate Balls
50g Milk Chocolate
White small balls

In a mixing bowl add the egg, sugar, margarine, vanilla and mix until all creamed together

IMG_4011

Add flour, salt and baking powder

IMG_4012

Mix until dough forms

IMG_4013

Roll small balls and place on to a greased baking tray

IMG_4014

Dip your finger or thumb in flour and indent each cookie ball

IMG_4020

Bake in the oven at 170c for 10-15 minutes until golden brown, remove onto a wire rack and place half a chocolate ball or small button onto the cookie while the cookie is hot/warm so the chocolate melts and allow to cool completely

IMG_4050

Melt chocolate and pour into a piping bag and pipe legs on to the cookies

IMG_4066

Add two drops of chocolate on the chocolate ball and place a white ball for eyes.

Allow to cool completely and enjoy!
