This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog. The next blog post is Monday, July 22.
TAKEAWAY: It was likely to happen: the day when those plush airline lounges for First and Business Class flyers would allow you to download your favorite newspaper or magazine right on your digital device. Lufthansa has done it via its new eJournals service.
At the Lufthansa lounge, find your favorite periodicals on the shelf…..
…or download them to your mobile device
Once you select the periodical you wish to read, pdf of pages for that day’s edition appear.
It’s all about choices: do I read my International Herald Tribune in its printed edition, or do I download it on my iPad?
Now airline lounges provide you with that choice. Lufthansa has taken the lead to offer its Lufthansa eJournals service.
It works like this: you take your pick from a large selection of digital newspapers and magazines in assorted languages and scan in your QR Code, or simply go to the eJournals download platform, http://www.lh-ejournals.com, then you are ready to go. Read your favorite publication in the lounge, or during the flight ahead.
I just tried it and was surprised at the variety of newspapers and magazines available. I am sure that more airlines will be doing this—just think of how much less “weight” each passenger will carry on board without a stack of printed newspapers and magazines.
And, yes, there is still a shelf with the full variety of printed editions of the same publications at the Lufthansa lounges.
Many passengers are seen leaving the lounge loaded with those “real” print editions while others are beginning to realize that to have 5 or 6 periodicals loaded on to a mobile device could be practical and more manageable.
I asked one seasoned Lufthansa flyer whom I run into at the lounge from time to time why he was carrying all the print editions of newspapers and magazine in his briefcase:
Somehow, although I have an iPad, I still prefer to sit down for the long flight with a stack of papers next to me. I can see them, touch them, and when I am finished with them, I know I am ready for my nap. I like that sense of being aware of what my news reading journey is all about when I read those publications in print.
His wife, however, confessed that she had downloaded three magazines on her iPad to read during the flight.
Something for everyone is the theme that prevails.

First paragraph:

Coming this week: Monocle Mediterraneo IV
Monocle’s fourth edition of its summer newspaper will hit the newstands at a beach near you (in selected locations) Thursday July 25.
Emily Smith, of Monocle, gives me the good news that copies are on their way to me. Look forward to it, especially as this fourth edition is described as a
“all-surfing, cocktailing, boat-building and cooking edition”.
“ Three years since Monocle Mediterraneo’s debut, the media brand continues its investment in intelligently designed slow media and global reporting. Recording a +45% advertising revenue increase and +40% increase in subscriptions since last year’s edition, Monocle Mediterraneo proudly joins the magazine in proving the value of print,“ as reported in the Monocle press release.
On newsstands for eight weeks, Monocle Mediterraneo is 62 pages and will be distributed to 105 markets across the globe, with increased presence in Australia, Indonesia, Morocco and Switzerland.
