Thoroughly awesome linguistics and language links

Excited by the building blocks of language? The Expect Labs office has its share of linguistics nerds, and often while reading industry news, really great resources and articles come to the fore. Here are a few discoveries:

  • Apparently, there’s a new free linguistics course on Coursera. That, plus links to other free linguistics lectures, here.
  • IPA Scrabble anyone?
  • Professor Patricia Kuhl, language acquisition specialist at the University of Washington, gives a fantastic TED talk on babies “taking statistics” of the sounds they need to know.
  • Great article on the difficulties of cross-language pluralization in JavaScript. “Things that seem straightforward are often anything but.”
  • Not a “discovery” per se, but here are some fun/interesting linguistics videos by Expect Labs Director of Research Marsal Gavaldà: (1) The Sounds of Music: Visualizing Songs With Spectrograms (2) The Sounds of Language: Seeing Sounds Through Waveforms & Spectrograms
  • Linguists from Google, Microsoft, and other companies share their advice for career-seeking linguists. (See video below)
