Like a midnight wander through a moonlit forest, the shadowy garage folk pop of Portland duo Is/Is lingers in haunting echoes of its own reverberation — but it hasn’t always been that way. After a lot of traveling and confining recording conditions, they’ve come from a darker and heavier place into a subdued, minimalistic sound. Carefully and gently they manipulated their old sound to create the psychedelic-tinged folk of their latest song, “Before the Stars”. The entire track has a mellow rippling effect as each line fades out into an echo of reverb-soaked guitars and vocal harmonies. Swaying along to the steady tap of the tambourine, “Before the Stars” drifts slowly through the murky folk sounds of Is/Is with ease. The rest of their six-track Shadow Days cassette is out now on Moon Glyph.
