thiruvathirai kali | how to make thiruvathirai kali - special festive south Indian sweet which we make for aarudra dharisanam.This rice kali recipe has to serve with thaalagam (7 kari kootu). This is a stew made with mixed of vegetables similar to Pongal kuzhambhu.

In kerala , it is named thiruvathira puzhukku. This thiruvathirai kali is to serve lord shiva on the auspicious day of arudra dharisanam. It is celebrated on the star day of thiruvathirai. Hence the recipe called this name thiruvathirai kali.

What is thiruvathirai kali story?

This kali is served by senthan(devotee of lord shiva) to lord shiva when he comes to his home disguised himself as sanyasi. During that time, in senthan house only rice and jaggery is available. He made kali with it and lord shiva enjoyed eating that kali recipe.

how to make thiruvathirai kali

  1. Dry roast rice to golden brown in low flame. Remove from heat , spread in separate plate and cool completely.
  2. In the same wok, add 2 tbsp of moong dal, dry roast till nice aroma comes and the color changes to golden.
  3. Cool them completely and grind rice and moong dal together as coarse rava like texture.
  4. Now in a sauce pan, add 1 cup of jaggery and ½ cup of water. Boil until the jaggery melts. Strain to remove the residue.
  5. Roast cashewnuts in 1 tbsp of ghee and keep them aside.
  6. Now start making kali in a strong bottomed vessel. Add 3 cups of water and allow to boil.
  7. Add ¼ tsp of salt and Start adding the grinded flour in two batches and mix without any lumps. While doing this, keep the flame low.
  8. At this stage, you can see the kali starts thickening. Now add jaggery syrup, mix and cover with lid or you can pressure cook for 3 whistles. Cook in low flame for abot 10 minutes. Keep stirring inbetween.
  9. Now open and mix well. Add cardamom powder, coconut and roasted cashews.
  10. Finally add some ghee, mix and serve hot.
