We are a highly news-conscious group. I rarely go a day ignoring the news. Usually I turn on FoxNews before my first sip of coffee. Within 5 minutes I have seen one terrifying story after another before thinking about anything else, setting me onto a desperate binge of searching out more of the story and spending the day seeking to alert everyone that the sky is falling.
Then the Holy Spirit put a spotlight on this verse, and subsequently the rest of the psalm. I immediately began to feel peace. My new morning routine is to make sure I read some of the Bible before allowing myself to see the news. The difference is amazing.
Psalm 112 is worth the trouble to memorize, to “hide it in your heart.” ~ TD
Psalm 112 (NIV)
Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.Their children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their hornc will be lifted high in honor.The wicked will see and be vexed,
they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.
So who will have no fear of bad news?
“…those who fear the Lord,
who find great delight in his commands.”
Parable of the lost sheep
Jesus came to seek and save the lost. He went to the ordinary people, with all their sins and blemishes; with all the usual sins. He healed them, but He rejected the self-righteous religious specialists. So what was the difference? The screwed up people knew they were screwed up, and feared the Lord. The super religious thought they had it so correct that they did not fear the Lord.
There is only one kind of righteousness that actually counts, the righteousness we are clothed in through faith in Jesus Christ.
Let’s all make sure we qualify.
