“There’s a Lady Who’s Sure All That Glitters is Gold…”

By Robert Bruce @robertbruce76

You know you’re a cool rock band when your lyrics quote The Lord of the Rings.

You know you’re an even cooler rock band when you quote The Lord of the Rings often. And that’s why Led Zeppelin might be the coolest rock band ever.

Just take a look at a few of these song lyrics.

One small sample verse from “Ramble On”:

Mine’s a tale that can’t be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T’was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her….yeah.

“The Battle of Evermore” is clearly about Lord of the Rings.

Queen of Light took her bow, And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.

The dark Lord rides in force tonight, And time will tell us all.

Even “The Stairway to Heaven” has a few LOTR references:

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold

And she’s buying a stairway to heaven.

There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west,

And my spirit is crying for leaving.

In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,

And the voices of those who stand looking.

Zeppelin also had songs like “The Misty Mountain Hop,” which obviously reference LOTR in the title but not so much in the lyrics.

In all, you know you can trust a band to make good music when they reference LOTR this much. Led Zeppelin was, and still is, one of the best.
