I’ve loved The Twoks since first seeing them on accident back in 2012. The Sydney-based electropop duo comprised of vocalist/violinist, Xani Kolac, and drummer, Mark Leahy, brings such incredible spirit to their live performances that it’s hard to not be entranced. Kolac, in her sunny polka dotted spandex, bounces around the stage with seemingly interminable energy as she plucks and bows her electric violin, chanting bright melodies over the exuberant drumming of Leahy. “First Light”, the duo’s latest single, is a brilliantly layered electropop track with a distinct 80s flair. It’s the first of their recorded music that accurately represents their live show. A love song at its core, “First Light” explores that moment in love when you realize it’s been there all along and you finally see the light the other person sees. Kolac’s plucks, trills and syncopated bow work on her electric violin are matched by the pop beat of Leahy’s drums which drive forward into the electrifying chorus. The track is filled with enough happy motivation to enliven the gloomiest of days.
