The Truth About Pregnancy

By Smilinglikesunshine @smilinglikesuns
I recently enjoyed watching this video from Parentdish and it got me thinking about my own pregnancy experiences.
Two weeks later, my first baby, Defne will turn seven years old. Each year, around this time, I remember the last few weeks of my pregnancy and I enjoy reminiscing those days. We were living in Algeria when we found out that I was pregnant with Defne . I had taken a pregnancy test but as a first timer, I wanted to be sure before telling it to the whole world so I decided to go to a doctor. When I arrived at the doctor's office, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought that I would need a blood test to confirm my pregnancy but instead I had an ultrasound and saw my teeny tiny baby (in fact,it was only a fetus at that point) at five weeks! I actually knew that I was pregnant because I needed to pee every five minutes! Oh well, little did I knew that the bathroom would be my living room(!) for a couple of weeks. I did not want to share this important news with my husband on the phone so I waited until he came back from work. The next day was Mother's Day and what a lovely announcement for our parents! They were over the moon! I can't exactly remember how it started, but my morning sickness was awful. I was throwing up the whole day. The only thing I could keep down was breadsticks, rice crackers and orange juice. It was such a relief when I stopped vomiting around 16 weeks. From then on, it was a good pregnancy. We moved to the UK when I was 6.5 months pregnant and here was a very different, much more relaxed approach to pregnancy. I had a beautiful water birth at our local hospital and it was one of the most empowering experiences of my life. Three years later, I was pregnant again. This pregnancy was proof that each pregnancy is different, even for the same woman. I was so happy about not having the morning sickness this time around. However somewhere around the fourth month, I started to throw up each morning after breakfast! This was better than my first pregnancy, but I was still looking forward to having done with this sickness. Looking after a toddler and being pregnant was tiring but enjoyable at the same time. I bought a yoga dvd and I would do yoga, together with my then 2.5 years old daughter. She still remembers about that! I gained more weight the second time around and was feeling like a penguin towards the end! My son was breech around 7 months. I wanted to have a water birth again but would not be allowed with a breech baby. I worked hard to change his position. In the end, I managed to gave birth to him in the pool! We feel that our family is completed now and despite some of the difficulties during the pregnancy, it sure was a magical time of your life. The excitement of being a mother, a family, waiting to meet your baby, all those preparations... Nine months feel so long at times, but blink, and it's gone. So be sure to enjoy those precious times.
