The Things You Need to Know About Three-Legged Cats

By Lucifer Bui

A few years ago, my cat Charm suffered an accident which cost it its left front leg. This has taught me how to better care for a disabled feline and why they deserve the same amount of love and attention four-legged kitties receive from their owners and the general public. In this article, I will share with you what my experience has taught me.

As far as caring for your adorable tripod fur friend goes, the process isn't all that different from the one involving a kitty that still has all its legs, at least for the most part. Your pet needs to be cuddled and loved first and foremost, as well as regularly fed. On top of that, its litter box has to be cleaned regularly and kept to a certain standard of hygiene.

Cats are incredibly sanitary creatures, which is why yours spends most of its time cleaning every strand of fur and every nook and cranny on its body. This attitude has to be reflected in its little personal toilet if you want its excretion to be healthy and regular. Fortunately, there are options that take some of the load off your shoulder if you dread this task.

The most popular choice is investing in a self-cleaning litter box that flushes away the waste. This maintains the area clean and proper without you having to get involved in the disinfecting process every single day. Of course, this type of kitty potty still needs to be washed every now and then, but the process is considerably less smelly and grimy.

Still, these are all aspects that pertain to a regular feline care routine. When your cat is an amputee, I strongly advise taking a few extra precautions. This is especially important if the pet has been living with you for a while and is already used to climbing to improbable heights and wandering on top of wardrobes and cabinets.

Seal off access to high places so that your furry tripod friend doesn't risk getting hurt. This is something I did myself and that has worked out great for the safety of my best friend Charm. In addition to this, I recommend that you rearrange some of the furniture around the house so that it has easier access to all its favorite places.

In addition to this, you have to be especially careful about your three-legged cat's diet. Although this is true for any feline, it is particularly important for amputees. Any additional pound they put on can greatly affect their balance, which is why you should be careful not to overfeed your pet. Moreover, ensure that it gets plenty of exercise to stay fit and mobile.

The fact that a cat has three legs instead of four is not a reason to pass up on adopting a new pet. In fact, considering that there are still plenty of people out there who take in animals based on their appearance, why not be the better person and commit to loving a disabled fur friend? It won't be any different to welcoming a four-legged feline into your home.

After the customary adjustment period, your tripod feline buddy will behave just like any other cat would. If it receives the proper warmth, attention, and care, it will reciprocate your love and enrich your life with loyalty and unconditional companionship. All in all, adopting a three-legged cat is immensely rewarding and doesn't require too much additional effort on your part.

The same is true if your housecat requires a medical procedure that will result in an amputation of one of its limbs. This might be a scary thing to envision, but don't dread it too much. Your pet can have a perfectly normal and fulfilling life even when it's missing a leg. All you need to do is make sure that you and your home are ready for it.

Playing off of your cat's disability to come up with a unique name for it doesn't have to be rude, cruel, or heartless. There are countless entertaining ways to look at the situation. As long as you don't mock its disability, you are bound to end up with something inimitable that will surely fit your little furry friend's personality and spark a conversation at parties.

Variations on the Number 'Three'

  • The German word for the number 'three' is a fantastic twist to add to your cat's name.
  • This one means the same thing in Spanish, and it will surely fit your feline's fun personality.
  • 'Tre' is another way to say 'three', but this time in Italian.
  • For the elegant three-legged cat, choose the French word.

Fun Puns or Synonyms

  • Have you ever heard the expression "third time's the charm"? This name adds a positive spin on your cat's amputation, which will encourage everyone to see that behind the operation lies a cat as lovable and vivacious as any other that still has all four limbs. It is also the name I chose for my own amputee best furry friend, so I wholeheartedly recommend it.
  • For science-loving cat owners, Pie is the perfect name, as it is based on the mathematical constant π, read as 'pi'. As you may know, its value is an approximate 3.14, the perfect description of your buddy's special situation.
  • Hatty or Hattrick. When a bowler takes three wickets in a row in a game of cricket, it is known as a hattrick. It's obvious why this would be suitable for your pet.
  • For spiritual cat mommies and daddies, we turn to the ancient practice of Ayurveda. The term 'dosha' is a Sanskrit word that refers to the three substances that are present in a person's body and make up their energy.
  • You can also name your cat after it's wobbly gait and adorable limp. Froggy is a cute name that is especially delightful when you have children in the family.
  • Some tripod felines have a habit of standing on their hind legs. For them, Meerkat is an ideal name.
  • When your three-legged kitty is energetic and jumps around a lot, Pogo makes for the perfect name.

My experience with my beloved cat Charm has taught me that caring for a three-legged feline doesn't pose too many additional challenges. What is more, it is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience, and your existence will be enriched by knowing that you are standing with your pet no matter what. I hope that my story has convinced you to adopt an adorable tripod kitty and make your life better in the long run.
