After his father’s death, he and his mother move across the country to live with his grandfather (played by Eric Roberts) in his humble beach home. As his mother struggles to find a job, Jake struggles to get along with the local teens, who live to surf and scare away outsiders. Jake wants to fit in, but he doesn’t know anything about surfing until he finds out one of his grandfather’s secrets -- he used to be a champion surfer before he walked away from it all. Will Jake learn to surf and begin to feel at home?
Although The Perfect Summer is a story we’ve seen before, it’s nevertheless an enjoyable film that the whole family will appreciate. It carries lessons about loss, bullying, and family, and teaches kids that courage and faith can help bring us through tough times. There’s plenty of surfing action to keep everyone’s attention, and we learn that you don’t have to have the “perfect” life to have a perfect summer.
