The New Silicon Valley Business Journal is Here!

Posted on the 04 January 2013 by Themarioblog @garciainteract

TAKEAWAY: We are excited to have readers in Silicon Valley enjoy our work with American City Business Journals. Our in-depth blog posts on the project start Monday.

TheMarioBlog is still on vacation, but we could not let today pass without posting the front page from the rethought Silicon Valley Business Journal! We will look deeply at this project starting Monday. I will be in San Jose next week, too, reviewing the launch and celebrating with the bicoastal Charlotte / San Jose American City Business Journals team.

Below is the note I wrote for the users’ guide in the new issue:

From our consultant: Mario Garcia

The American City Business Journals are recognized for their incisive, thorough and authoritative business coverage of their communities.

In today’s world, however, how that information is packaged becomes important. We are constantly bombarded by information through what I refer to as the media quartet: mobile telephones, online, print and tablets. Especially in the cycle of business news, it becomes important to make information not only relevant, but also easy to navigate through and to read.

We at Garcia Media have been involved with the rethinking of the world’s largest financial newspapers including The Wall Street Journal, The Wall Street Journal Europe and The Wall Street Journal Asia, Germany’s Handelsblatt, India’s Mint, among others. If there is one lesson we have learned it is that business news readers are among the most sophisticated, well informed and tech savvy. They are also among the most digitally connected. I am convinced that they bring the mentality of consuming information digitally to the printed page.

As a result, our work with the ACBJ and the Silicon Valley Business Journal, specifically, has applied strategies that will make readers navigate through the content easier, starting on Page One. While this is a major visual rethinking of the newspaper, including new typography, page architecture and color palette, the real changes are in the ways storytelling is approached, especially in the use of graphics that will facilitate understanding of major stories.

All in all, the changes you will see and will experience in today’s edition of the SVBJ will make your journey through the newspaper easier and more pleasant. More important, you will feel that what is already superb business journalism has been enhanced to make it also easier to access.

SVBJ Publisher James MacGregor also wrote a note on the relaunch:

Here’s a gift you don’t have to wrap!

It’s official. The Christmas/holiday shopping season is here.

Here is a suggestion for someone on your list: my digital book iPad Design Lab: Storytelling in the Age of the Tablet. No need to stand in line nor buy wrapping paper. Just send it to someone you think might enjoy a book about this magnificent new platform we call the tablet and how to maximize its potential for storytelling.

Here is how you can get the book:

The original version of the book is the multitouch textbook version available on the iBookstore for iPad (iOS 5.0 and up): https://itunes.apple.com/book/ipad-design-lab/id565672822. This version includes video walkthroughs, audio introductions to each chapter, swipeable slideshows, a glossary and a sophisticated look and feel.

Apple only sells multitouch textbooks in certain countries at this time, unfortunately. Copies are available in at least the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and the United States.

For those in other countries and without an iPad, we have made the book available in a basic edition for other platforms. This basic edition includes the full text of the original, along with the images and captions, but lacks the other features such as audio and video. It is available on the following platforms in many countries:

Amazon Kindle: http://amzn.to/SlPzjZ

Google Books: http://bit.ly/TYKcew
