The MindMeld Speed Challenge: Voice Search for Restaurants

By Expectlabs @ExpectLabs

The numbers show that people speak much faster than they type, but how does this play out in mobile search?

To find out, we raced voice and touch to the finish line in a video series. Check out the comparative speeds of a restaurant search:

Voice for the win!  But there are a few more take-home points than just that:

  • Data from Amazon shows every 100ms increase in load time decreasing sales by 1%. (And in the case of restaurant search, hungry people aren’t known for being patient.)
  • Many features come into play when selecting the right restaurant – from its menu, to its hours, to its location, to its ambience, to its price-point, to… you get the picture. It’s just as important that your results are ranked correctly as it is that your words are understood. At MindMeld, we understand this and approach language understanding as a search question.
  • When people search for local businesses, they’re often on-the-go. Typing on a mobile device while driving can lead to injuries and fatalities – one of the major incentives for voice, beyond just speed of search.
