The Carousel
The Albinelli Market along with the city paid to have this antique carousel installed in the square in front of the market for most of the winter. I went almost every single day for two weeks with my son. It was my favorite spot in the city. This beautiful German made Carousel is from the 1700s and is covered with paintings done by hand, handmade horses with real horse hair tails (kinda gross!), and beautiful antique mirrors.
The horses rock back and forth instead of going up and down, since at the time the technology wasn’t evolved enough for the up/down mechanism. Another interesting fact about this Carousel was that once upon a time real horses made it go around! There were two or three that would have been attached and they would have walked along side moving the whole carousel along its platform. Think about how cool that would have been for the kids! Some 200 years later the motor was added!
