The Long & Winding Road: Socially Unacceptable

Socially unacceptable…

There are times when the financial gains simply do not justify business practices which undermine the very fabric of society. Business has always had it’s sharp edged side, the need to push the envelope in order to drive change. When decisions are made on the flimsy basis of being consistent with the ‘freedom of choice’ idea the credibility of an organisation must be called in to question.

This week Facebook has resumed allowing postings of video footage depicting decapitations and other violent incidents. Let’s step back a moment here, Facebook is a ‘social platform’ designed to allow people to engage and communicate, to learn and expand boundaries.

Why then would a supposedly ‘social’ business do something so profoundly crass and damaging to it’s user base?

Money!

There is NO justification in pretending to hide the powerplay for users against the disingenuous talk of ‘user choice’. Yes, I am annoyed by this, it is not my normal procedure to criticize but in this instance Facebook is so dominant in the marketplace they open the door to the lowest common denominator.

In the ‘social space’ there must be some standards maintained, we are in this for the long haul. Damaging people with violent videos and uncensored postings will lead to other degrading subject matter…and we will not only be emotionally and psychologically poorer for it but responsible.

Today, it is a little harder to feel good about being in this business when there are people at the top who are allowing this garbage to infiltrate our lives….. anyway, all it takes is one good man to stay silent for evil to reign…….. so don’t!

see you on the long and winding road…….. Patrick
