This week, our Monday Threesome is taking you into the onset of winter with some music that’s a bit dark, maybe even on the melancholy side. Few things can warm you up quite like heavy guitar riffs, though, so relax and snuggle up with these freebies from angsty chick rockers!

The Greatest Light is the Greatest Shade – The Joy Formidable // Buy

Earlier this year, the Welsh trio known as The Joy Formidable (@joyformidable) released their debut LP, The Big Roar. Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite releases of 2011. Rolling percussion, thundering guitars, and lead-lady Ritzy Bryan’s femininely dark vocals, make their music a fresher version of 90s rock. You can stream six full songs on their website and see a plethora of official/live/remix videos on their YouTube page.

The Grey Ship – EMA // Buy

The gloomy-yet-endearing Past Life Martyred Saints is the debut album of Oakland-native EMA. Her label, Souterrain Transmissions has a free download of the single, The Grey Ship. Though subtle in nature, this track opens into heavy instrumentation and is a great representation of EMA’s (@emathorstar) style. The album itself features a good mix of down tempo and heavier tracks, all of which retain a level of intimacy due to their narrative style. The official EMA YouTube page also has videos for the tracks “Marked”, “Milkman” and “California”.

Punching In A Dream – The Naked And Famous // Buy

Boasting the broadest mix of sounds on this Monday Threesome, The Naked and Famous’ (@tnaf) Spring debut, Passive Me Aggressive You, has plenty of rock undertones, blended with strong electronics. Their music can change in an instant, but definitely has a way of keeping the listener intrigued and wanting to hear more. The band recorded a Baeble Session at The Bowery Electric recently, and this past week they released a video teaser via their official YouTube channel for the next single “No Way”. The band’s Vimeo page has some of their official videos, plus some live vids, worth checking out as well.
