The Future is Bright for Melbourne’s Tourist Dollars [Premiere]

Melbourne’s Tourist Dollars have polished their dreamy guitar pop into a flavorful and transportive EP. The dusty, melodic trails of the collection are forged by frontman and songwriter Jesse McCormack’s graceful lilt and fleshed out into their full undulating form with the help of Dave and Aiden McMillan (Redpspencer). As a whole, the EP has a textured sway that’s placid but engaging.

Opening the set, “Ageless” weightlessly propels forward in waves of swelling synth until it recedes into the sounds of the ocean tide. “End of Times” references late ’60s rock in the smooth rise and fall of its glossy melody. The distant and ultra-bright “Reflection” retains the EP’s calming magnetism but adds a healthy dose of kick drum and ricocheting drum fills. But, it’s “Horse Girl” that shines with sunny sadness. Shifting its momentum with dexterity, the downer of a track still manages to glide through pristine harmonies to an almost frenetic climax. “The future is bright” becomes the resounding mantra of “Horse Girl” and an appropriate prediction for the band themselves.
