As a parent, I am fine w/the hamburger idea, even though it teaches kids to write in a very boring and constrained way. Still, I think it's fine for elementary school. My main problem is that our school teaches paragraph writing too early, in my opinion. Our second-graders really struggle with it, but some of them still don't form their letters correctly. I wish they would push off paragraph writing until late third- or even fourth-grade and focus on grammar, spelling, and punctuation in the younger grades.
There seems to be a fundamental flaw to the argument. The blogger writes, "The problem is this format doesn't encourage thoughtful persuasion. It promotes low-level summary that nobody really cares about."
Seriously? It's WHO encourages thoughtful WHAT.

Piranhas comprise more than 85-65 species of fish, depending on whom you ask. The many species fall into four genera: Pygocentrus, Pygopristis, Serrasalmus, and Pristobrycon. Piranha in the Pygocentrus genus are the most common variety, the kind you might find in a pet store. Pygopristis piranha are herbivores, feasting on seeds and fruits, not flesh. In contrast, fish in the Serrasalmus genus eat only meat, and their teeth are razor-sharp. Pristobrycon are the least friendly of all piranhas they often bite the fins of other fish, even fish of the same species. The label piranha, then, refers to a wide variety of species.
The reason the 5-paragraph essay made its return was because teachers needed in-depth education and ongoing support in how to teach writing well. Without serious training in the art of writing, students' growth as writers is not likely. Writing is thinking and even the most innovative approaches to writing will fail if our teaching of writing is built on anything other than the belief that writing begins with a thought -- a deep thought that has pluses, minuses, and interesting implications. Also, the true craft of writing reflects what readers know -- how to use words and conjure images to make one's writing readable. Again, if the teacher cannot make this thinking visible, we will make no progress in an area where improvement is sorely needed.
