Chinese Phone company launched its new phone, Oppo A9, in the already congested mid-range phone in India. Oppo’s last launch was the reno series, which did extremely well in the market. With that confidence, the company is looking to make a mark in the market. So, let’s see if Oppo A9 has the capacity to do so!
Classy design and good built quality:
The design is sure to catch your eyes. The dual-color 3D gradient design is different from previous Oppo devices, giving it a modern look. The device indeed looks impressive, but we suggest you use a clear case to avoid any smudges and marks. The curved finish is slick and meets the side to give an easy-to-hold experience.
The rest of the features are pretty much standard as the 3.5mm head jack making a comeback in most phones. Other than that, Oppo did a good job with the design and built quality.
Good overall display:
The phone has a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ (720×1600 pixels) resolution. Plus, A9 features a 20:9 aspect ratio and an 82.5% screen to body ratio. The panel is very glossy, which makes it difficult to read under direct sunlight. The display also features a water-drop notch on the top and bottom.
Don’t expect any deep blacks from Super AMOLED that you get in Samsung devices. But the usability is good with decent color reproduction and brightness. But the brightness goes down when you view from an angle. Other than this, there are lots of new interesting features like “Night Shield” that adjust blue light while reading, Widevine L1 certification for HD video playback on streaming devices.
More than average Performance:
A9 has all the typical hardware that you see in a mid-range phone. It is powered with Snapdragon 665 SoC with an octa-core CPU clocked up to 2.0GHz. The phone comes in two variants of RAM (4GB & 8GB), 128GB internal storage, and Adreno 610 GPU. This is very powerful, as it was seen in the performance.
The phone zipped through 8 to 10 apps without any delay. Plus, I switched from WhatsApp and PUBG without any problem. You can easily play games like COD, Dead Trigger 2, and Shadow Gun Legends without any issue. Lastly, the audio sound during calls and music is very relaxing for your ears.
Oppo A9 quad-camera setup:
No oppo review is over without discussing the camera. The quad-camera isn’t impressive but not disappointing. First, we have a 48-megapixel primary sensor and an 8-megapixel secondary sensor with an ultra-wide lens. The third is a macro lens, which is 2-megapixel used for depth mapping. For the selfies, we get a 16-megapixel front camera sensor.
On the software end, we have all the standard features like “Night,” “Pano,” “Expert,” Time-Lapse,” HDR, “Dazzle Color,” and built-in filters. There is no problem in the camera except for zoom in difficult condition. Other than that, it is pretty fantastic. The thing with Oppo A9 quad-camera is that there is nothing new exciting. The existing features work like a charm.
Battery and other features:
The phone is powered with 5,000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery and reverse charging. However, no speed charging, so it will take 2 to 3 for a full charge. The battery backup is pretty decent, as it will last a whole day easily. The phone runs on ColorOS 6.0.1 out of the box with CPH1937EX_11_A.08 which is based on Android 9 pie. Other than this, the phone features Bluetooth v5.0, GPS, and FM Radio, etc.
Should you buy the phone?
Oppo A9 is not a bad phone, it does all the basics right. It has a very good camera and overall performance. The only thing is its price, which is 16,990 in India. If we look at the competition, you can easily find better phones in the same price range. Unless you are an Oppo loyalist or looking for a 48-MP camera, you can skip A9 for now.
