If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for that perfect product that will make your thin, scraggly hair look thick, smooth, and luscious. You’re also always looking for a product to make your skin look just a little less like Night of the Living Dead. Well, thanks to Eva from The Ethical Silk Company, I have learned that there is something that can take care of both of these issues and give you a great night’s sleep. Natural silk pillowcases!

I’ve heard that it’s good to use silk pillowcases before, but I didn’t understand why. I thought maybe it was just because they are smoother than cotton or other fabrics. Well, they are smoother, but that’s not their only benefit. The Ethical Silk Company sums up why we should be jumping on the silk pillowcase bandwagon:

•Silkworm silk is the strongest of natural fibers. It contains natural protein and 18 essential amino acids, known to reduce the signs of aging. It also contains natural cellular albumen which speeds up the metabolism of skin cells, thus delaying the aging process.

•Natural Silk is a breathable fabric. It is a natural temperature regulator, helping the body retain heat in cold weather and excess heat is expelled in warm weather. Therefore your body maintains a natural, comfortable temperature.

•Silk is hypoallergenic; it does not attract dust mites and is a natural fungal repellent. Silk Pillowcases and Silk Baby Cot Sheets can therefore help alleviate asthma and other allergies.

•Silk has an extremely smooth and soft texture which proves to be beneficial for those with sensitive skin conditions (e.g. Eczema).

•Silk from silkworms (Mulberry Silkworms) does not conduct static electricity so the use of silk pillowcases reduces hair breakage and thinning of hair, whilst helping the hair to maintain proper moisture balance.

Eva Powers, founder of The Ethical Silk Company, learned about the benefits of silk at an early age from her mother, who slept on silk and encouraged her to do the same. After becoming aware of some of the unsavory practices in traditional silk production, Eva set out to create a product that was not only superior to other products out there, but was also produced in a way she felt good about.

“Ahimsa ‘peace’ silk, a particular eco-friendly silk production where no animals are harmed in it’s production process. The result is beautifully rich silk which, because of the particular way it is produced, is softer than regular silk.”

Along with pillowcases, she also created the “Gift for Life” baby cot sheet, which has various uses for your baby’s early life, and can also be used as a scarf for yourself.

To have her products manufactured, Eva turned to her aunt, a Presentation Sister in India, who knew of a tailoring unit in Theni, South India. This tailoring unit is part of a Women’s Federation that offers a unique opportunity for the women working there to learn skills and earn a fair wage under great working conditions.

“The aim of this Women’s Federation is women’s empowerment through organization into self help groups eg : Credit Groups, where the women make a small but regular saving which enable them to borrow from the group at a low interest rate.

The federation offers the women regular periodical training based on different topics such as time management; liberalization; globalization; legal aid; women’s rights etc. It follows the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2015) and Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.”
