The Eggs and the Basket

Last night, as I was working on my presentation for the upcoming MBlog 2012 Conference, something hit me. I am a couple of months away from celebrating 10 years as a professional.

In my career, I have worked in different fields: translation, teaching, journalism, content curation, and social media consulting. I also released seven books (with an eighth in the works), wrote two plays and a couple of short stories, and facilitate social media workshops. These different occupations have allowed me to acquire invaluable skills and experience — and meet great people in the process.

At the beginning, I drove my family and friends crazy because I often said no to opportunities that would have relieved me financially for a while, but that I felt were not good for me.

Things were challenging for years. But I forged on, knowing that I was the one in charge of my destiny.

And then, one day, the magic happened! Positive testimonials of my work started pouring in, and with them, promising partnerships. And the icing on the cake, new clients approached me. Clients who shared my vision, were respectful, professional, and willing to invest in their brands.

And of course, family and friends realized that I had been right all along. They now support me for the right reasons.

In 10 years, here is what I have learnt.

Every victory is worth celebrating, no matter how small it is.

There is no failure in life, only detours that we need to take if we want to become the best at what we do.

Diversification is key, just like open-mindedness.

When you put all your eggs in the same basket, you close the door to opportunities. You settle for less.

And when you do, you attract the wrong crowd.

Now, what is your story?
