I just wanted to let all of you know that today, June 6th, is the 80th anniversary of the drive-in movie theater. The first drive-in theater was opened in New Jersey by Richard M. Hollingshead, Jr. in 1933. The drive-in theater really peaked in the 1950s and the craze lasted into the 1960s, but by the early 1970s, their popularity began to decline and in response to this, the drive-ins turned to exploitation cinema and pornography. Today, most drive-ins sit abandoned or forgotten, although there are still some that remain operation, eager to sprinkle a bit of summer nostalgia on American audiences. I’ve posted some old vintage photos and even a video in celebration of the anniversary. Enjoy and look for a review of the 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet tomorrow.
