The dessert everyone asks for when visiting Pioneers Lane

Hello friends,

Do you remember life before Pinterest? When you had to be invited to join? It was like entering a secret society. I was SO excited when my invitation arrived. Today it's my go-to place for recipes, design ideas, and travel inspiration.

About a year after moving to Pioneers Lane I became friends with someone who inspired me to try baking from scratch. She suggested starting with a crumble, 'they are easy enough.' It was the push I needed to leap into making vs. buying from the local baker.

The first time I made the recipe below

we were hosting a winter dinner for twelve. I remember being anxious, trying a new recipe for a table full of Europeans. Oh, how they love dessert! As the meal was being served, I placed the ceramic dish in the oven, which was brimming with fresh blueberries and oatmeal.

Since that day, this is by far the most requested dessert when guests visit. My husband will forward me emails with special requests, "is Mari baking her blueberry crumble by chance?" In the last two weeks, I have had four people ask me for the recipe. Two more have asked me to prepare it for them... confessing that their crumble never tastes like mine.

I smile and find a bit of humor in that statement, anticipating the first bite. It all rests with the berries, tart to sweet.

While I think of Crumbles as a winter dessert, I make this year-round (when requested). So thankful to search Pinterest and find the recipe below. I am smitten with the author, owning both of her cookbooks.

Making this mouth watering treat

Blueberries are available year round here, which allows me to use fresh berries. I fill the baking dish with two inches of fresh blueberries. I have mixed some fresh, some frozen. It is a forgiving recipe - you can't go wrong.

Recipe from What Katie Ate

  • 2 x boxes of frozen blueberries
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar

  • 2/3 cup chilled butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • A handful of rolled oats (optional)

Preheat your oven to 350˚F

1. In a bowl place the flour and into which add the butter which is chopped into little cubes, rub together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in your brown sugar.

2. Into an ovenproof dish add the blueberries and sprinkle with the caster sugar.

3. Scatter the crumble mix on top and finish with a handful or two of oats. At this stage sprinkle another spoonful of brown sugar on top and place in the over for approx. 40 minutes until the crumble is browned.

4. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

I hope you will try this one over the holiday's.  Let me know if you do!
