The beauty of hibiscus
Hibiscus is more than just a pretty flower with an aroma that conjures up exotic images of tropical holidays. While the scent of hibiscus has long been popular as an ingredient in perfumes, soaps, body lotions and oils, the truth is many elements of the hibiscus plant - ranging from the seeds to the petals - have been useful to the skincare industry. They can be found in everything from eye cream and cellulite serums to haircare products.According to Jurlique Global education manager Rebecca Nicholls, the brand uses hibiscus extract in its Purely Age-Defying Facial Serum and Purely Age-Defying Eye Cream because it has proven anti-ageing and skin-smoothing benefits."Hibiscus extract helps to provide an immediate effect in minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," Ms Nicholls said."It helps to target the prevention and smoothing of expression lines and has been proven to firm skin."Hibiscus extract also protects the skin against free radical damage, as it's a powerful antioxidant."Charlotte Turner, head of education at Clarins Australia, said that hibiscus proteins were used in Clarins products because they stimulated the circulation and helped tighten and drain the skin."Proteins and peptides are used to stimulate, repair and firm the skin and therefore are often used in anti-ageing or age-restoring formulas," she said."The hibiscus proteins are particularly soothing and gentle, therefore best for use around the delicate eye contour."
