*Authors Note* This is a post I did a while back and I now want to expand on it after having learned more information from the voice-over that came from the new trailer for Season 5 of True Blood.
Before I begin, I have to tell you that I am still not totally stoked for season 5 at all. I am, however, very interested in the Authority, the AVL and what that story has to tell us, if anything. Of course, I still do not quite trust Alan Ball to tell a cohesive story so I am not getting my hopes up of learning anything of great importance where the Authority and AVL are concerned. I want to be blown away by the Authority story-line, I am tired of being served only vegetables for dinner, I want some meat DAMNIT! Let’s begin shall we?
Since the premiere of the fifth season of True Blood is almost on our doorstep and we are once again going to be introduced to the Authority and the AVL, hopefully with more juicy detail, I thought I would reacquaint ourselves with a little Authority/AVL 101. I thought I would start with a little blast from the past for this little lesson. I am starting here because it is pertinent in order to understand what we might be seeing this season. Also, I just wanted to say that I did not come to these conclusions on my own. My observations come from watching the show and PAYING ATTENTION and I also got a little help from friends since they had been watching longer than I. Well, let’s pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the video. I will join you after the break.
*sets the popcorn aside* Now you did not have to watch the whole video or even at all because I will give you the highlights. When I first saw this postmortem, I thought what the heck was that all about? There just had to be a point to giving us all that information, after all they did not film it for their health. So what was the point? It really boils down to three very important things that came straight from the Bulgarian Vampire’s mouth.
1. Monarchy: “These Monarchs are not unlike any of the ones you are familiar with from history books. They either seize power from themselves, marry into it, or inherit it from their Makers. They even behave much the same way. They tend to be petty, cruel, and for the most part, unwise. What I am quite certain that you do not know is from where these rulers divine their power. I am willing to offer you information concerning the very foundation of our culture.”
2. The Authority: “Unbeknownst,I am sure to any human of consequence in your country, is the existence of the Authority. It controls every aspect of institutional vampire society, from the Monarchs to the agenda of the American Vampire League, which operates so freely in your country. Through its adherence, it inspires an almost religious devotion. It is the law and it is infallible. Disobedience is unthinkable. It is the Authority that decided it was time for us to reveal ourselves to you two years ago. It is the Authority that empowers the Monarchs so that it is a crime of treason for them to be defied.”
3. Money: “Let me ask you, Agent Williams, have you ever met a vampire who wanted for money? Have you ever asked yourself why? So many of them around for so long, long enough to amass unspeakable wealth. These are very powerful vampires, Agent Williams and with the funds at their disposal, the extent of their influence is limitless. You have politics, for example, global finance. Do you really think the worldwide financial crisis was caused by a few bad mortgages in Tallahassee?” When asked if had inside knowledge of a worldwide vampire conspiracy, his response ” You have no idea.”
We learned in Season Four in a flashback from ‘Nan the vamp with no plan’ that the Authority/AVL wanted to mainstream and the Monarchs according to an 80′s punk rock Bill would ‘crush’ them before they has a chance to do it. Bill was to plant the ‘seeds of discord’ from within, whatever the hell that meant. I assume it was to get the Monarchy to come around to the Authority’s way of thinking. What if neither side planned on mainstreaming? Just some food for thought but I will get back to that later.
The Authority are the ones that created the AVL to enforce their own brand of justice. Flashing the money around to local politicians and having ribbon cutting ceremonies? I still smell T-R-O-U-B-L-E a brewing in season 5 as I still believe that the plan of the Authority/AVL is to lull humans into a false sense of security, while it secretly plans to slowly take over the world and mold it into the vision they want and need. They are like the Visitors in that respect, who claimed one thing while they were stealing the Earth’s water supply and harvesting it’s people for food, all to be taken back to their home planet, except the home planet will be Earth.
Now as we know from Season 4, the Mendacious Mr.Compton was working for the Authority/AVL and has been for a very, very long time. I still don’t think that was good news for Mr. Compton! Let’s start with the money issue, shall we? Bill came to Bon Temps on the guise that the Old Compton Estate reverted back to him since Ole Jessie Compton had no descendants. How does one, who is technically dead and has been for over a hundred years get the deed back if no palms were greased heavily with green? We know it was not Queen Sophie because she was dead broke (pun intended), Enter the Authority/AVL. You know they are the ones who tricked out his house as well, they let their little lap dog out of the closet.
So now we look at this new information we learned from the new trailer which stated the following:
“We were created in God’s image, not humans and their flesh will nourish yours, their blood shall flow within you, for as the beetle nourishes the lark, so shall humans nourish vampires”
You may ask yourselves the same questions I did! Is this the Authority or someone in the AVL going against them? Is it someone in the Monarchy pretending they are following the law of the Authority? As for me, I have always thought the Authority was up to no good, and with Nan saying there are factions within makes this thought come back to me again and again.Nan claiming that Eric knows what she is talking about has me thinking that Nora might have been keeping him abreast of certain things but not all. Bill looked shocked or surprised at the statement made by Nan because he was the one working for the Authority and not Eric. I will not get my hopes up that this will paint Bill in an even worse light, but I believe that Ball should go there; it would make for some rich television. The supposed good guy has everyone fooled and is totally in with the bad guys and the supposed bad guy is in with the good guys. I can only hope that Ball would have the guts to take his precious Bill down that road but I digress.
The statement made by Alexander that “Eric is very intrigued by Bill now” is interesting to me but not for the same reason as others. The reason being is that it always made more sense to me that Eric is the double agent as he could feed information to his vampire sister and she would do the same. Bill being a double agent would have made sense if the reason for it would not have been so stupid and it actually meant something but we were told nothing. The Authority wants to mainstream or pretend to mainstream while the hierarchy want no part of it and Bill has to plant discord among them. How did he do that for it was never shown? What exactly did he do in this role? In the midst of playing a double agent and planning discord, he was given the order to procure Sookie for the Queen. He knew the Queen was selling her own blood, via Eric and never turned her in. It all made no sense.There is something big going on here, in my opinion and given this new information we heard in the trailer makes me go back to thinking that the Authority is up to no good! I wonder who is on what side in this HOT MESS.
I am still not sure I would trust the Authority/AVL as far as I could throw them! Maybe nobody should.
