The 6 Steps to Perfect Blog Structure

Using a proven structure ensures quality with every post. Here are 6 steps to a fail proof formula you can use every time you blog.

1. Decide what the blog post is about. You need to be able describe this in one or two sentences. If you haven’t identified your theme before you start writing you risk developing a “spaghetti blog”. When too many topics are involved they can end up tangled like spaghetti and lacking cohesion. Readers don’t want to work too hard to understand what they are reading about, and it’s confusing and frustrating when the writer goes off on too many tangents, sometimes never to return.

2. So, here’s the trick. Write your headline first. This will provide laser focus for your writing. Remember your headline is crucial to the success of your blog post.

3. Once you have decided on your theme you need a hook to interest the reader. It’s worth putting some effort into because this can be the defining reason for your reader to continue.

Depending on your topic you might begin with a humourous anecdote, or a quote or a stunning fact. Professional writers put a lot of time into working out their first sentence or two because they know it is crucial to readability.

4. Use a billboard sentence.  ‘Billboard sentences’ link your clever, funny or shocking lead to the main part of your blog. A billboard sentence lets the reader know precisely what your blog post is about.

So you might start off with a relevant or humorous quote or anecdote to hook the reader in. The billboard sentence orientates the readers as to what the blog post is about and why it matters.  So that’s a great start. You’ve hooked the reader in by your amazing first few sentences, then you’ve orientated your reader by briefly explaining where you are going.

5. The middle.  Spice up your blog post with anecdotes and case studies. No matter what your topic, a human element will add interest and context. Content tip:  If you want people to take your blog seriously make sure you use evidence based writing- use key facts or research to back up what you say.

6. Endings: In general readers like a bit of closure so take the time to craft some sort of ending. After this it is a good idea to ask the readers what they think of the topic, or what their experience has been.  This drives reader engagement and encourages the conversation.
