Thao & The Get Down Stay Down visited Webster Hall on Wednesday, playing new music as part of their current tour to support A Man Alive (Ribbon Music), released in late March. Before beginning this tour, though, the band also performed at nine shows during SXSW in Austin.

The new album, A Man Alive, was inspired by front lady Thao Nguyen’s relationship with her estranged father, who split up with her mother when she was little. “A lot of tracks in this album go back and forth in a battle between forgiveness and anger,” she said.

The band started with set with “The Evening”, a new tune from A Man Alive, followed by a mix of tracks from older and newer albums, including “Nobody Dies”, “Departure”, “Holy Roller”, “Swimming Pools”, “Every Body” and “Age of Ice”. For their encore set, the band surprised the crowd with “Get Ur Freak On”, a Missy Elliott cover, and ended the night with “We the Common”.
