On Friday the 22nd, Tesla will begin delivery will of their four-door electric car, the Model S. Designed and built entirely in house, Tesla has taken orders for the sedan since 2009.
With a base price of $57,400 ($49,900 after a $7,500 federal tax credit), the Tesla S gets 160 miles per charge. Upgrades are available to batteries capable of achieving 230 miles and 300 miles on a single charge. The upgrades come at a cost though, roughly $10,000 for every extra 70 miles.
According to Tesla, the “Model S Performance takes electric performance to the next level. Equipped with the 85 kilowatt-hour battery and a high performance drive inverter, Model S Performance accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds.” These numbers are for the top of the line Model S. The base model comes with a 40 kilowatt-hour battery, while the mid-level option has a 60 kWh power source.
Forbes reports that not all customers who placed orders will get the car on Friday. A “handful of lucky customers will be able to drive a Tesla Model S home on June 22, others that reserved the new electric sedan will have the opportunity to test drive the Model S prior to delivery.” Forbes goes on to say that a 45 day tour is planned for people to test drive the car. “The first weekend of the event, June 23 and 24, kicks off at the Tesla factory in Fremont, Calif., with 2,000 test drives in a single weekend.”
