Stephen King is known for his horror, but in my opinion he doesn’t get enough credit for how well he sets a scene.
Here’s an excerpt where he describes very neatly the character of the town:
The town is the people who live there, the buildings which they have erected to den or do business in, and it is the land.
The people are Scotch-English and French.
There are others, of course – a smattering, like a fistful of pepper thrown in a pot of salt, but not many. This melting pot never melted very much.
