Archaeologists say that ancestors of the Taos Indians lived in this valley long before Columbus discovered America. Ancient ruins in the Taos Valley indicate our people lived here nearly 1000 years ago. The main part of the present buildings were most likely constructed between 1000 and 1450 A.D. Approximately 150 people live within the Pueblo full time. The Pueblo Indians are about 90% Catholic. Catholicism is practiced along with the ancient Indian religious rites which are an important part of Taos Pueblo life. The Pueblo religion is very complex; however, there is no conflict with the Catholic church. Tiwa is the native language. Traditions dictate that no electricity or running water be allowed within the Pueblo walls. Most members live in conventional homes outside the village walls, but occupy their Pueblo houses for ceremonials. via
The drive to Taos from Santa Fe, NM is about 3-4 hours (depending on how many photo-op stops you make on the way). We made a day trip there and boy! were we glad we did. When you scroll down you will see their reservation area (pueblo) which is shockingly in same state as many villages back in India, the only difference being the native choose to keep it the same way as it way since 1000s of years as part of tradition and cultural preservation. Their way of living and use of natural resources to meet their daily needs, is practically same as any Asian country.P.S. Don't miss the tandoor (I forgot what they call it) they use to bake breads just like we do to make Naans!
