It’s taken a while to put together this post! Here’s a Taiwan roundup of my trip from earlier this month. I pretty much spent the entire trip eating hence all the food pics in this post.
If you’re a die-hard Hello Kitty fan like myself, you must visit Hello Kitty Sweets Restaurant. This restaurant is extremely popular in Taiwan. We made reservations a few days before we left Australia for lunch on Saturday. I would recommend making a reservation if you are planning on going to avoid long queues. The cafe is very cute and everything is decorated with Hello Kitty including the rest rooms. We ordered a set meal, which includes a starter, main, dessert & drink. We also ordered an additional two desserts because the cakes were too cute to miss.
After going to the Hello Kitty, we were hooked on themed cafes. So we also decided to dine at the Toilet Cafe! You’re probably thinking whatttt the heck is a toilet cafe??!?
It’s a restaurant where you sit on toilets and eat your meals out of novelty miniature ceramic toilet (as pictured below).
The food was very average and kind of expensive compared to Taiwan pricing but I guess it was the experience of dining on a loo haha.
During this trip, we joined a 5 day scenic tour which took us right around the island to the most popular touristy places.
I guess a lot of younger travellers prefer to freestyle their trips but the hubs and I like tours because we don’t have to plan and organize anything. Plus we don’t mind waking up early.
The hotels we stayed at during this tour was sooo amazing. At two of the hotels, we had our very own private hot spring. The hotel buffet was so darn good too, I missed that the most since being home.
This photo was taken at Taroko Gorge. The bus ride there was dam scary, the roads were so narrow. When I glance out of the bus, I couldn’t see the road only what was below… Braving the bus ride was worth it, the gorge was so beautiful and have never seen anything like it.
Taiwan is famous for their night markets where you can get a taste of local food and snacks.
We visited Shillin, Ningxia & Lio Ho night market. Shillin was the biggest one which stretched over several streets and even had an underground food court.
Each night market has its own unique characteristics. Some markets only sold food where as other markets will sold clothes and gadgets too.
The hubs loved the night markets, he had no fear and ate anything that looked edible. Whilst for me, I was a bit apprehensive (sensitive stomach you see). He especially loved the smelly tofu. If you don’t know what smelly tofu is, it’s fermented bean curd and it reeks.
I tried it and didn’t like it. I literally gagged in my mouth, it was gross.
Mister Donut was everywhere in Taipei.
Each day, I would stand there admiring the donuts neatly stacked on the counter. I couldn’t get any because I was always full from breakfast.
On our last day, we had Mister Donut for breakfast. It’s not like your typical donuts you get here in Australia. The donut was kind of dense and not fluffy like Krispy Kreme. It’s not very sweet either and has a chewy texture.
I’m quite on the fence with this donut.
I’m not sure if you can describe a temple beautiful but this is exactly what it is. This temple is called Fo Guang Shan Monastery. I didn’t upload the photo but on the other side of this photo is a giant Buddha. Starbucks is so popular in Taiwan, there’s even a store inside this temple but selling only vegetarian foods and drinks.
So that pretty much sums up my Taiwan trip.
Guys.. we are currently planning our next trip! We just booked our tickets to LA and Rio in November! We are trying to do more traveling for next few years. So unfortunately, my makeup addiction may be slightly affected. I cannot spend frivolously no more. I’m going to try to shop my stash more.
