Staying on the edge of swimwear fashion is all about collaboration and learning from the best and brightest in the industry. Those people we like to call fashion leaders. The knowledge you can take from these fashion leaders is endless. They’re constantly coming up with new ways to think about the outfits you wear everyday. So, we at SwimsuitsDirect.com wanted to highlight some of these fashion leaders and pick their brains for a new ongoing interview series called Swim-Talk.
For our first Swim-Talk interview we chose Erin Cannon, the author of the blog The Fashion Canvas as our fashion leader to highlight. The 26 year old fashion blogger hails from the great state of Utah. Her fun bright and bubbly personality shines through her fashion choices. Her style is self described as a combination of girly and trendy, but with a love of pushing the limit. By day she works for a local Marketing Agency and by night her real self comes out as a fashion blogger extraordinaire.
1) What drew you to the world of fashion?
I have always had a huge passion for the fashion industry. I love experimenting with clothing and like to express my bright personality through my clothing (which is why you will see me in neons and brights 90% of the time)!
2) How do styles differ in Utah compared to cities like New York or L.A.?
I think that people are much more conservative and relaxed in this state! That is why I try to push the envelope with my followers to encourage them to get outside of their box or wear something fancy for a change.
3) Where is your favorite beach?
My favorite beach is in Punta Mita, Mexico! I travel there frequently and it is one of the most picturesque areas in the world.
4) What do you think about apparel shopping online vs. shopping in an actual store?
I think that the convenience of online shopping is unbeatable!! The ease of having something delivered right to my door is a great experience, and I feel like most companies are so great on returns and return shipping, that it makes it very easy for a customer to buy online.
5) What advice can you give online swimwear shoppers?
I always order one size bigger! I have never seen a girl on a beach where I have thought their swimsuit was “too big” lol. Typically in a swimsuit if you get a little bigger, it tends to be more flattering on your shape.
6) How many swimsuits do you own?
I own about 10-15 swimsuits! Some old and some new (you always have to hold on to that perfect fitting bathing suit for years lol).
7) How often do you get a new swimsuit? And how often do you recommend getting new pieces?
I usually get a few new swimsuits every year in the spring. Because I live in Utah which experiences four different seasons, I am usually only in a swimsuit during the summer months. I think getting a few swimsuits every year is a must, unless you live somewhere warm and then I think my entire closet would be full of swimsuits (I am addicted to the pool and beach fyi).
8) What bathing suit styles and colors will be in this summer?
As of late I have been moving towards the one piece look. I think they have an essence of class and glamor and flatter my frame much better. Typically I love a great black suit, but this year I am excited to get ones with lots of colors and prints on them, maybe a hot pink or striped suit is in my future.
9) how much do you think the rest of the fashion world influences swimwear? How does it influence swimwear trends?
I think the fashion industry can be extremely influential on swimwear. I think that fringe, sequins, patterns, etc. can all be introduced at the same time they are appearing on the runways.
10) What is your favorite style of bathing suit?
My favorite style is the one piece swimsuit. I think they have an essence of class and glamor and flatter my frame much better.
11) A question I’m sure is on everyone’s mind, stripes or spots which do you prefer and why?
Definitely stripes. They are so nautical feeling and the perfect look for a swimsuit.
12) Who is your favorite swimsuit designer and why?
I love a local Utah brand Kingdom and State. They are great at perfecting the retro swimwear look.
13) What are your favorite beach or poolside accessories?
I think a great sunhat and tote are poolside essentials!
14) Does where you are headed determine what swim outfit you would wear? Would beach wear be different from pool wear be different from resort/cruise wear? How would it change what you where?
If I am laying out at a pool, sometimes I choose a bikini or bandeau bikini so I can get the best exposure and tanning lines. If I am going to a resort/cruise, I may pick a piece that is more versatile that I can easily walk around in, or throw on some shorts or a small coverup to be able to walk around.
15) Describe your perfect poolside outfit.
A great swimsuit, bright coverup, Tory Burch flip flops, some killer shades and a large sun hat!
16)What advice do you have for finding the ideal swimwear?
Be patient! Sometimes you want to buy the first swimsuit you see, but not all of them are created equal. So make sure you find one that you feel comfortable in and that has the quality to last a long time.
17) Many women and young girls often feel insecure when it comes to wearing a swimsuit. What advice do you have for them to strut their stuff and put on their swimwear with confidence?
Find a swimsuit that flatters your body! Just because your friends may be wearing an itty bitty bikini, doesn’t mean that you have to. Be yourself and be confident with how you are, because confidence is what makes a woman sexy, not matter what the size.
