In what could be considered as a major show of kindness and sympathy and the spirit of service of the Minister of External Affairs, when the whole relationship of India-Pakistan going through a tough phase, Sushma Swaraj assured a four month medical visa to a Pakistani citizen who reached out to her regarding his ailing infant. She assured Ken Sid, a father of a two and half year old child that he will be provided with a medical visa for the treatment of his ailing infant in India.
According to the reports, the infant is suffering from a heart condition which is not treatable in Pakistan. Ken in his distress call said that he had sought a medical visa for his ailing son and he has emphasized the point that even though the relationship between India and Pakistan is strained at the moment, his son is not aware of these happenings and hence he should not be deprived of proper treatment.
The father sought help from Swaraj, who is known to be highly active and responsive to the distress calls on the Twitter, micro-blogging site. Swaraj’s intervention came after the infant’s father brought the matter to her notice on the Twitter handle named @KenSid2, the tweet read as, “Why my bud suffers for medical treatment!! Any answers Sir Sartaaj Azeez or Ma’am Sushma??”
To this Sushma Swaraj said, “No. The child will not suffer. Pls contact Indian High Commission in Pakistan. We will give the medical visa.” To the reply of the External Affairs Minister, Ken Sid responded tweeting, “It is heartening to see humanity prevailing despite the differences and thanked all for their efforts.”
Earlier, the family has been trying to get a visa for three months. It has been reported that many Indian Twitter users pleaded to Swaraj to help Ken Sid treat his son, and this is why the father thanked all for their efforts.
An official at the Indian High Commission said, “A four-month medical visa has been issued to the family so that the boy could undergo the heart surgery in India.”
As the consequences of Kulbhushan Jadhav episode, India had said, “We have suggested that their foreign minister or foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz give a recommendation letter and it will be cleared immediately, without any delay”. Adding the insistence on a recommendation letter would enable us to ascertain that the requests received from Pakistan are genuine.
Frequently, many ailing Pakistanis travel to India on medical visas for seeking their treatments for the complicated health problems. Previously, the Indian hospitals have reported to receive around 500 patients from the neighbouring country, Pakistan every month.
However, the visa process for the Pakistani Citizens wanting to visit India for medical reasons has slowed down amid the rising tensions between the two countries over a number of reasons, including the issue of Pakistani military sentencing to death Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav on charges of espionage and the cross-border terrorism.
It is been said that the ailing infant will be arriving to India for his treatment on Monday under Dr. Rajesh Sharma, eminent Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Jaypee hospital Delhi.
