Summer Cake.

Summer Cake.
Summer Cake.
It was my Grandpa's birthday the other day so I made him a cake to celebrate - the result was so pretty and summery that I just had to share it with all of you. I was inspired by several recipes and photos off Pinterest, and in the end decided to go for a classic chocolate sponge with icing and pile on the summer berries on top to give it more of a summery feel. Using the heart mold was a special added touch to make it a little more special, I used one of the silicon ones which I think we picked up from ikea many moons ago, and it just makes the whole process a lot easier - flipping it out and washing up is a dream after using it.
The recipe is pretty simple, link here, although it does require a few different bowls and things, but the smell of this baking, and the satisfaction it bought to everyone who ate it, definitely made it all worth it. Plus, the smell of it baking in the oven was just heavenly - I'm pretty sure it won't be long until only the crumbs are left! I made a few small alterations, and actually made a ganache using soured cream instead of the suggested icing to make it a little less sickly, but it was definitely a hit, and one that I won't hesitate to do again.
What is your favorite thing to bake, do you like the sound of this?
