Turn On The Sunshine – Suckers

Brooklyn rock band Suckers have recently presented us with a deceptively simplistic jocular pop track, “Turn on the Sunshine”, found on their upcoming sophomore LP Candy Salad (released through Frenchkiss Records). After touring with Brooklyn psychedelic pop group Yeasayer in 2010, “Turn on the Sunshine” gives fans a complex arrangement of poppy chord progressions merged into the smooth, singular focal point of a sweet and innocent love track. Punctuated with a Caribbean xylophone, and tracing the melody with an appealing guitar backing, the song navigates the ecstasy of falling in love on a Hawaiian beach, and narrates the innocence of a breezy, gradual build to a pleasant and approachable layered structure.

Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut, their lyrical vagary and re-appropriated dance music have been entertaining Brooklyn locals for the past few years with their self-titled EP (2009) and full-length Wild Smile (2010). Their new album is a transition away from this re-appropriated dance sound, though, moving instead towards tracks that are an amalgamation of the Talking Heads and Jimmy Buffet. You can see them at Glasslands on May 1st for a show that promises to “Get Your Body Movin’”, a track off their last album and a mission statement for the band.
