I don’t give a flip about the Superbowl. Yea, it’s fun, the commercials are great and it can be exciting, but I really don’t pay much attention to the football during the season. I’m also a St. Louis Rams fan, even though I’d be hard pressed to tell you the name of their current quarterback. I started liking them when I was nine years old because I liked their helmets. Then, when I was in high school, Jim Everett was the quarterback of the Rams and I thought he was kind of hot. No, I don’t dislike football, I know how the game is played and I do find it fun. I’m just not a die-hard.
I feel pretty much like this about the Superbowl.
Be that as it may, doing what I do for a living, I couldn’t help but think about the limited options women have to wear to root for their teams. Let’s face it, shapeless football jerseys look horrible on 98% of most women’s bodies and, even though there are strides being made towards more stylish football fan fashion for women, I believe that there are quite a few alternative ways you can show fan pride without even putting a jersey or a logo on your body.To come up with some stylish superbowl outfits ideas for today’s unique One Item, Five Fashionable Ways, I thought about the fact that both the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos have team colors that are based in navy. For the Broncos, their navy is paired with orange and this very cool bright green pops off the richness of the Seahawks’ navy uniforms. Given the similarity and simplicity of both these teams colors coming up with some outfit ideas, for whichever team you will be rooting for, was actually quite simple for me. Plus, if you’re not a Broncos or Seahawks fan there are still many tips below about how to wear color with navy. In all cases, the color combinations are a lot of fun. Speaking for myself, if I was dragged to a Superbowl party (because there was a gun pointed at my head) and I gave a crap about which team won, these are the ways I would show my team spirit.
Five stylish Superbowl outfits for whichever team you root for
Look #1- Use a scarf
With a pair of jeans and basic navy turtleneck, you can easily tell who is rooting for who with the simple addition of scarves.
On the left, an orange scarf by Michael Kors is clearly cheering on Peyton Manning and team. The outfit is finished with a casual orange cross body bag by HOBO and orange earrings by Blu Bijoux.
On the right, the pop of green with the navy in the outfit for the Seahawks has a lot more style than Richard Sherman’s commentary after Sunday night’s game. All it takes to show which team you hope will win is by winding a green scar, like this one by Steve Madden around your neck to make it clear. Finish it off with a pair of green earrings by David Aubrey and a green handbag by Olivia Harris.
Look #2- Dress up a dress with team spirit
Next, lets say you are attending a dressier Superbowl party (highly unlikely) or you are a big football fan who has evening plans and, regardless of the fact that you can’t sit in front of the TV and root for your team, you want to show some team spirit. It’s actually quite easy if you start with a basic navy dress, like this one from Reiss.
On the left, the dress is styled with a pair of orange earrings by Blu Bijoux and a pair of orange ombre pumps by Jessica Simpson. Go Broncos! On the right, for you Seahawks fans, the same exact earrings by Blu Bijoux that also come in lime green are used along with a pair of green Nina pumps. Both outfits are completed with a navy Stuart Weitzman clutch. For all you girly girl football fans out there, yes,you can look like a lady and know your football.
Look #3- Fancy Footwork
Talk about simple. Try choosing a pair of shoes in your team’s color. On the left, for the Broncos, an orange pair of Tieks ballerina flats are styled with a pair of jeans, this super casual Athleta top, navy scarf from Fab.com and basic navy earrings. On the right, for the Seahawks, the same shoes in green are used. Granted, a pair of Tieks will run you about the same cost as an official NFL jersey but you’ll probably get a whole lot ore use out of these shoes than you would a jersey, all while looking a lot more stylish. To bring in a little team spirit I added a Broncos leather zipper clutch and, for the Seahawks, a clear messenger bag, both available at the NFL shop.
Look #4- Belt it out
The last, super easy, way to show whose side you’re on is to belt a denim button down shirt and pair of blue corduroy’s with a belt in your team’s color. On the left is a MICHAEL Michael Kors belt in orange, that is actually reversible to metallic when you aren’t cheering for your team, and for the Seahawks, a green belt by Lauren Ralph Lauren pops off the navy in much the same way the green pops off the Seahawks’ jerseys. Lastly, the same exact bag by Foley comes in both orange and green. I guess Foley is rooting for both teams?
Look #5- A true fan
If you have somewhere dressy to go on Superbowl Sunday or if the party you are attending is super dressy, I felt I’d be remiss if I didn’t show these two dresses which make it so obvious which team you’ll be cheering on.
On the left, the orange and navy Halston Heritage dress is all Broncos and is styled with a pair of nude pumps, orange and navy earrings and same clutch used previously.
For Seahawks fans, this Reiss dress not only captures the colors of the team but it almost looks like it was designed with fans in mind. All it takes is a pair of silver metallic heels, a pair of crystal and green earrings and the same clutch to make this dress elegantly Superbowl ready.
Of course, if you are a serious fan, you can find out if these horribly tacky rabbit fur football jerseys I spotted a few years ago at a gift event are now available in Broncos and Seahawks styles. God, I hope not. $1,500 should never be this ugly.
